Encadernação com marcas de uso, ligeiras perdas de cor em alguns pontos e um pouco gasta nas margens e na lombada, que apresenta também as extremidades um pouco amachucadas. Tem uma etiqueta de livraria colada na parte de dentro da capa da frente. Apesar de acusar algum uso, de um modo geral, está ainda muito apresentável. Páginas bem conservadas e limpas, embora apresentem um ligeiro amarelecimento e algumas pequenas manchas (raras, incidindo sobretudo nos cortes). No topo da folha de guarda inicial tem uma assinatura de posse e na base do verso do retrato tem um pequeno carimbo de livraria. *** Trata-se aparentemente de uma versão destinada ao público jovem, em prosa e linguagem actualizada, dos célebres Contos de Cantuária (The Canterbury Tales) de Geoffrey Chaucer, escritos no século XIV, maioritariamente em verso e tidos com a sua mais importante obra. Escre o Autor no texto de apresentação: «I have endeavoured to put these Tales, written by one of the finest poets that ever lived, into modern language and as easy prose as I colud, whitout at the same time destroying the poetical descriptions and strong natural expressions of the author. My object in presenting them in this new form was, first, that you might become wise and good by the example of the sweet and kind creatures you will find described in them; secondly, that you might derive improvement by the beautiful writing (for I have been careful to use the language of Chaucer whenever I thought it not too antiquated for modern and young readers); and, lastly, I hoped to excite in you an ambition to read these same stories in their original poetical dress when you shall have become so far acquainted with your own language as to understand, without much difficulty, the old and now almost forgotten terms.
